Marina & Boatyard

The Level 2 Diploma for Maritime Studies: Marinas and Boatyards has been developed by the Maritime Skills Alliance and is intended for people working in Coastal or Inland Marinas and Boatyards.   This NVQ is a work based qualification that can be used for anyone working in a Marina or Boatyard environment. The award is tailored to suit the needs of the business. You will complete the mandatory units then choose the optional that suit your job role.

The Diploma is supported by the British Marine Federation and the Yacht Harbour Association, the represented bodies for the marina and boatyard sector.

These people may be working as marina operatives, boatyard operatives, inland marina operatives.

 

They will require skills and knowledge in:

 

  • Lifting and moving boats and yachts
  • Moor and berth boats and yachts
  • Move loads in boatyards
  • Maintaining marinas and boatyard equipment
  • Health and safety in the workplace
  • Customer service

The Level 2 Diploma is designed to be assessed in the workplace, after the learner has had suitable experience of working in marinas or boatyards.

 

Examples of the settings or centres in which the Level 2 Diploma is likely to be delivered include:

 

  • Coastal marinas
  • Boatyards
  • Inland marinas

 

The Level 2 Diploma is also designed to assess knowledge in the workplace (ie on board), or ashore (perhaps in a simulated environment) after the learner has had suitable experience of work on appropriate vessels.

  • Maintain Environmental Good Practice in Marinas and Boatyards
  • Develop Productive Working Relationships with Colleagues
  • Resolve Customer Service Problems
  • Respond to a Pollution Incident in a Marina
  • Deliver Customer Service
  • Optional units
  • Move and Store Boats and Yachts Ashore
  • Prepare Boats and Yachts for Moving
  • Moor and Berth Boats and Yachts
  • Move Loads in Marinas and Boatyards Using Lift Trucks
  • Prepare Docks and Slipways for the Receiving of Boats and Yachts
  • Maintain Equipment for the Lifting and Support of Yachts and Boats
  • Maintain Marina Pontoons
  • Clean Boat and Yacht Hulls
  • Prepare Yachts for Rigging and De-Rigging
  • Inspect and Maintain Yacht Rigging
  • Maintain Records Regarding Vessels in Marinas and Boatyards
  • Provide a Fuel Service for Yachts and Boats
  • Operate Pump Out Facilities in a Marina

 

The NVQ is a mix of, underpinning knowledge, and occupational competence.

Assessment

 

You will be assessed through work that has been undertaken in the workplace or simulation, supported by independent acceptable evidence supplied by the learner.
