What is Personal Licence Training?

A Personal Licence course is required if you want to oversee the sale of alcohol, and is a legal requirement for all Designated Premises Supervisors. The personal licence training course is a comprehensive 1-day course and is for those learners already working in, or preparing to work in, any industry that involves the sale of alcohol.

The course is a pre-requisite for anyone who wishes to apply for an APLH (Awarded Personal Licence Holder). Anyone wishing to sell or authorise the sale of alcohol by retail on licensed premises must hold a valid Personal Licence.

What does the personal licence cover?

The personal licence holder training course is a 1-day intensive course that covers all of the essential aspects of handling and selling alcohol responsibly. During the day you’ll learn:

Nature, purpose and period of validity of a Personal Licence
The legal duties of a personal licence holder
The nature and strength of alcohol and the effect on the body
The law in relation to premises licences
The role and responsibilities of the Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS)
The law in relation to the protection of children

Who is the APLH Level 2 suitable for?

Our personal licence holder courses are suitable for anyone who has a role in which the authorisation of alcohol sales is essential. This includes retail managers, restaurant, hotel and bar managers, premises supervisors and more. The course is also suitable for individuals not yet in these positions, but who wish to progress into these roles.

Applying for your personal licence after the course

Once you’ve completed your personal licence holder course, you can apply to your local council to hold a personal licence. Your application will require a criminal record check and declaration, and you’ll need to submit passport-approved photographs. Your application will need to be submitted to the relevant licensing authority, and there will be a cost associated with this.
